| 10/10 | Absolutely amazing. A fantastic character is created in Holden, and although not a terrible amount technically happens in the book, I was never bored once due to the protagonist's interesting view of the world. Fantastically written, extremely influential, this is a must read. One thing that however annoys me about this book is the reputation it's got, and the people who sympathise with Holden. We're not technically meant to sympathise with the young, immature, unstable Holden, and the people who believe his commentary on 'phonies' is the truth scare me quite a lot... | |||||
| 5/10 | Average at best. Perhaps only Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" is more over-rated. | |||||
| 1/10 | No real storyline. Not all that good since it's about some kid who thinks his life is boring - which, it is. Tedious. You don't even meet Jane who he supposedly likes which could've been the only interesting bit in the book. If you like to NOT waste time then don't read it. | |||||
| 5/10 | "The Catcher in the Rye" is dated. It was was a good commentary of life in the 50's and 60's but hardly has a place in today's world. Of course, Sallinger's skill as a writer is still evident and the book should be read for the exposure to such strong writing. It will one day join all the "old" books we are forced to read in school. | |||||
| 10/10 | An all-time classic. | |||||
