The novel narrates the complexities of relationships and focuses mainly on family relations and bonding. It also throws light on the young age relationships and class differences. The story revolved around a very refined girl from a very well off family named Gertrude Coppard. She meets a miner at a party named Walter Morel and they both fell for each other immediately. The two passionate lovers end up on getting married but Mrs. Morel does not approve of the low pay of Walter's job so the couple gets into a lot of fights. In the meantime, they have two baby boys who suffer from this. Mrs. Morel, heart wrenched from her marriage, diverts all her love to her sons. Her sons hold such strong feeling for her. The elder son breaks up his relation due to the girl being superficial while the younger has to give away his soul due to his mother disapproval of the girl. The story continues to narrate the relationships between the family members. The novel had many adaptations. |
