Vladimir Nabokov8.5/10Buy Book
About: Lolita is a novel written by Vlamdimir Nabokov in 1955. Later it was translated in Russian language and published in 1958. The book got extreme popularity for its novelty and criticized for a controversial subject as well. Speaking to both aspects, the book became a worldwide success. The story has a self narrating pattern by the leading character, Humbert, who becomes sexually obsessed with a girl named Dolores, also known as Lolita. She is the 12 year old daughter of Charlotte, who is in a relationship with Humbert. Humbert stays closer to Charlotte just because of his sexual addiction with her daughter Lolita. When Charlotte dies, Humbert forces Lolita into doing sexual acts with him. He was possessive about her and would not let her interact with other boys. He knows that Lolita has no feelings for him as he does for her, but still due to his sexual obsession, he could not let her go. The novel narrates these events in a way that touches the reader's heart. The novel was listed among the 100 best novels from 1923-2005. It also had a movie adaptation in 1962 and 1997 as well.

4/10I read the book in college because everyone else did. I read it again 10 years after that. 30 years later,I stick but my initial assessment. I give it a 10 for literary ability and deduct 6 for sordidness of material. This book definitely brought out the incest survivors in my book club.
10/10The most amazing language. The main plot has absolutely nothing to do with why this book is amazing. Pedophilia is maybe 10% of what really matters about it. If you read it, read it for the way the story is told, and for the unreliable character.
10/10It's beautiful. It is quite provocative but also fascinating. How an intelligent man can hide such darkness inside of him and can finally set it free. And how little Lo turns Humbert's game against him and starts manipulating him... And in the end both's lives are ruined. The way this novel is written is just mindblowingly beautiful - i'm especially impressed since English wasn't Nabokov's first language (though i might be wrong). A lot of people dislike this book because of that pedophilia part which doesn't bother me. I guess it's because isaw the movie from 1997 before reading the book and it just made the story look so romantic in a way...
10/10Beautiful, visceral, stunning, ineffable: one of the greatest books of all time.
