The book got extreme popularity for its novelty and criticized for a controversial subject as well. Speaking to both aspects, the book became a worldwide success. The story has a self narrating pattern by the leading character, Humbert, who becomes sexually obsessed with a girl named Dolores, also known as Lolita. She is the 12 year old daughter of Charlotte, who is in a relationship with Humbert. Humbert stays closer to Charlotte just because of his sexual addiction with her daughter Lolita. When Charlotte dies, Humbert forces Lolita into doing sexual acts with him. He was possessive about her and would not let her interact with other boys. He knows that Lolita has no feelings for him as he does for her, but still due to his sexual obsession, he could not let her go. The novel narrates these events in a way that touches the reader's heart. The novel was listed among the 100 best novels from 1923-2005. It also had a movie adaptation in 1962 and 1997 as well. |
