About: Hatchet was written by Gary Paulsen in 1987, which won a Newbery Honor. Hatchet has four sequels with it being the first novel of the series. It has an adventurous theme and revolves around the lead character named Brian Robeson. He has a heart attack while flying a one engine plane and crashes the plane in the Canadian wilderness. From here, Brian learns to survive by creating fire on his own and tries to adjust with all the available food he has in that wilderness like fish, fruit, turtle eggs, rabbits, berries and birds. In his life struggle he develops talent as a craftsman and perfects the art of crafting spears, arrows and bows. He gets a chance to reach the plane one day and with that he builds rafts with the help of hatchet which he accidentally drops in water. With immense struggle, he manages to return to the world he belongs to. The novel beautifully narrates mankinds capability of surviving in any environment and our excellent learning capability. The novel had a TV film adaptation under the name A Cry in the Wild.
